Scholarly articles

scholarly articles are papers published in journals or conference proceedings, as well as chapters and other individual contributions published in edited collections.

Secondary publishing rights

The right to republish a work elsewhere once it has been published for the first time immediately or after a period of time. This right, included in some national European legislations, is granted to authors when publishing results from publicly-funded research, regardless of the contract or transfer agreement they might have signed with a publisher.

Self-archive

The act of depositing a scholarly work in a repository by its author.

SESAC

The acronym originally meant ‘Society of European Stage Authors and Composers’, which is a rather misleading title as the company actually provides performance licenses in the US.

Share-alike

An element in certain Creative Commons licences that requires derivative works to be licensed under the same or a compatible licence.

Subject repository

A subject repository collects, preserves and disseminates research outputs in a particular subject and will accept work from scholars from different institutions.
